Artistic Gymnastics Classes

Mark Hughes current North West All round British Gymnastics champion at level 2

When was the club formed?

The Cheshire Academy Artistic gymnastics club was first formed in 1993 specifically for children and young adults with disabilities

What sort of disabilities are catered for?

Our disability club caters for children with physical, sensory and learning disabilities. For instance have children with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome, Fragile X, Motor difficulties, Williams syndrome to name but a few.

What ages are catered for?

Children aged 5 and upwards are welcome to join and we have members of our club in their 20's. Children who are younger can come along to our integrated pre school gymnastics classes.

Do you run more than one type of class?

We run a whole range of classes depending on a childs ability and needs. Some classes for instance are language orientated where developing communication and meaningful interaction is the main focus of the class. This may be especially useful for children who fall within the autistic spectrum.

Our Artistic Gymnastics team who triumphed at the National Special Olympics in Glasgow during 2005

Other classes look closely at physical aspects of a childs development and issues such as coordination, balance, overall sequencing and occula-motor tasks predominate.

We are keen to match each child to the appropriate class

What successes has the club had?

The Academy has won more than 145 All Round regional and National titles since its formation in 1993. We have trained many gymnasts to regional, national , european, and international standard including "All Round World Champion" level.

Successes during 2005?

During April, the Academy performed exceedingly well at the British Gymnastics North West Regional Games collecting a massive 14 All round Regional Champions ( see regional games report for 2005..)

7 artistic gymnsts from the Cheshire Academy competed at the National Special Olympic games held in Glasgow and returned with 21 gold, 14 silver and 4 bronze medals as well as 2 All Rouns National Titles.

They performed some tremendous gymnstics and a full report (and photos) can be accessed on the National Special Olympic Games
