When was the club formed?

The Cheshire Academy Rhythmic Gymnastics Club was formed in 1994 specifically for children with disabilities, and it has a formidable reputation in the field of disability rhythmic gymnastics.

What sort of disabilities are catered for?

The Rhythmic Gymnastics club caters for children with physical, sensory or learning disabilities and we welcome wheelchair users (both male and female) who can participate in our wheelchair rhythmic gymnastics programme.

What ages are catered for?

Children aged 6 and upwards are welcome to come along and learn rhythmic gymnastics skills, using hoops, ribbons, balls and ropes. Rhythmic gymnastics is excellent at developing hand to eye coordination, balance, gross and fine motor skills as well as helping develop memory and sequencing skills. But most of all children are able to come along to meet and make new friends.

What have been the clubs successes?

The Academy works from beginners up to national and international level and we have won a number of British Gymnastics Association (BAGA) national titles, and also numerous National and International titles at Special Olympics, most recently at the World Special Olympic Games held in Dublin during 2003.

At these World games 24 year old Celia Flegg was one of only 4 rhythmic gymnasts representing Great Britain and she returned with a gold, a silver and two bronze medals.

The Cheshire Academy also had the privilege of having coach Chantelle Bradshaw selected to coach the Special Olympics GB Rhythmic Gymnastics team.

Successes during 2005?

The Cheshire Academy has 9 rhythmic gymnasts who qualified to compete at the National GB Special Olympic games held in Glasgow during July 2005. They returned in triumph with 14 gold, 7 silver and 5 bronze medals as well as 2 "All Round" national champion titles.
