Vicky Perez bestowed with Crewe and Nantwich Councils highest sporting tribute; to be placed on its "Sporting Roll of Honour"
On November 29th 2005 at a special ceremony in the Municipal buildings in Crewe, special olympics world champion gymnast Victoria Perez was bestowed with Crewe and Nantwich councils highest sporting honour. She has been included in Crewe and Nantwich Borough Councils 'Sporting Roll of Honour' for her achievements as a local ambassidor for disability sport within the borough and especially for her remarkable achievements at the world special Olympic games in Connecticut US.

Vicky is the first person ever to receive this prestigious accolade for success in the field of disability sport and her name has been engraved on a ceremonial plague to be displayed in perpetuity at the entrance to the Municipal building.

Coach Iain Chalmers praised Crewe and Nantwich council for their progressive thinking and for the tremendous encouragement that giving this honour will do for disability sport.

"For years disability sport has been seen as something which athletes played at, that it was not real sport. Councillors from Crewe and Nantwich have come to realise that the achievements obtained by disabled sports men and women are equally as valid as those achieved by non disabled participants, indeed the efforts that are placed in the way of a disabled persons success due to their own physical or intelectual difficulties, or due to the barriers placed in front of them by society means that they have a much more difficult task at achieving success. I applaud their decision to include Vicky on the Sporting Roll of Honour and hope that this will be the beginning of a renascence within the borough to nurture and encourage athletes with disabilities to help and assist them toachieve their highest potential."

At the ceremonycouncillors paid tribute to Victorias tremendous gymnastics success at a world championship level, outlining her unique abilities and her distinction of having competed at the advanced level 3. This is the highest standard that can be achieved in set routines in special Olympics and the highest level ever competed internationally by a special Olympic gymnast from the UK.

Chairman of the Borough Councils civic affairs committee Howard Curran said

"Vicky is a remarkable young person who has shown that disability is no barrier to achieving the highest possible level in sport. She is an inspiration to other young up and coming gymnasts and athletes and has brought great honour and distinction to the borough"
