When were College and University students first placed at the Cheshire Academy? The Cheshire Academy was first approached by Universities in 1995. This was initially because of our national success in a range of disability sports and our work with such a variety of individuals with different disabilities. The Academy now has close links with a number of University and Colleges in the UK and in Europe.
Our expertise and practical experience in the field of disability sport means that universities and colleges running many varying types of degrees such as BSc Sports Science and Disability, Sports Studies, Educational Psychology and even Community Health Care, are keen to place students at the Cheshire Academy so that they can get hands on practical experience. What do the students learn? Students placed at the Cheshire Academy can learn many different aspects of disability such as physiology, sports psychology, health in the community and disability sport in general. Students on placement have the chance to work with individuals with disabilities over a large age range starting at pre-school level (18 months old) on up to adults. Students are able to learn about child psychology and are able to see different stages of development of mainstream and non mainstream children. Students and professionals have the chance to work with young children with autism and communications difficulties and can be involved in a range of structured classes and programmes developed to improve language and communication, assist with improving social interaction, and help develop strategies to improve behaviour. Students on longer term placement will have the opportunity to take governing body qualifications and to work with specific groups of children either developing a specific sport, or developing a specific set of behavioural or communication goals. How to find out more about our work in the field of Education If you would like to know more about the work of the Cheshire Academy and how we can assist college and universities with their disability sport courses please contact us at the following address education@disabilitysport.com |
