The Cheshire Academy Badminton Club

The Cheshire Academy Badminton Club is a club specially organised for Children and Young Adults with disabilities. It is a very inclusive club which welcomes children with Physical disabilities, Sensory disabilities and Learning or Intellectual disabilities and children without any disabilities what so ever. We play every Friday Evening at Malbank School in Nantwich.

When was the Club established

The club was established in 2011.

How are sessions structured

Experience has taught us that children and young adults with disabilities can feel isolated from the community and one of the important roles of the club is to develop a sense of community where children and young adults have the opportunity to make and meet new friends and be part of a team sport. The Academy organises a number of different sports on a Friday Evenings including Boccia, Bocce, New Age Kurling and Indoor Athletics. From 6.30-8pm we play Badminton. We teach all the basic skills and pair children together and young adults together of similar abilities.

What sort of disabilities does the club cater for

The club caters for children and young adults with a whole range of disabilities and has within its ranks members who have cerebral palsy, autism, downs syndrome, amputees, ADHD, epilepsy, as well as children with Learning and Intellectual disabilities. Children and young adults who have no disabilities are also most welcome to join.

How Successful is the Club

The Club is under a year old however our training is developing well and we hope to enter disability players for their first competition during the 2012/2013. We intend to enter Special Olympic Badminton competitions.

Is this sport appropriate for use in Schools

Badminton is very appropriate for use in Schools. There are many skills and games that can be practiced to develop hand to eye coordination. You can get groups of children to aiming for different type of targets; trying to get them to drop shots in to hoops or buckets.
