The Cheshire Academy Athletics Club was first founded in 1995 specifically for children and young adults with disabilities. We took part in our first competition in Portsmouth during 1996. When and where do we train? We train at the Cumberland Arena in Crewe every Saturday morning, however due to extensive refurbishment of the Cumberland Arena during spring and summer 2005 we will be using alternative venues to train (please contact us for details) Who do we cater for? Children from as young as 8 years can join the Jaguars.. We cater for children with a whole range of physical and learning disabilities including children with cerebral palsy, downs syndrome, autism, ADHD, dyspraxia and more. The Jaguars caters for all levels of disability from elite to profound. We firmly agree with the philosophy that athletics should be available to anyone and that this should be a "Sport for All"
Children have the opportunity to learn a whole range of track and field disciplines including, sprinting, standing long jump, soft ball throw and shot putt, all designed and geared to a child's individual ability. Children also learn to work as a team and to help and assist each other. Academy staff see the importance of learning social skills such as cooperation and patience and the teaching of these skills is central to the way that we operate What successes has the club had?During 2002 members of the Cheshire Academy Athletics team were selected to represent Great Britain at the National Austrian Special Olympic games held in Bludenz. Our team comprising of Neil Jones, Kevin Schofield, Julie Pointon, Tony Harris and Celia Flegg returned with 6 bronze medals in total.Gifts from the Mayors of both Crewe and Nantwich and from the Austrian town of Bludenz were swapped and the team was commended for their "tremendous professionalism and sportsmanship" that they exhibited during their week long stay in Austria. (See 'past successes 2002')
